Following the retirement of head coach George Brown, the Jaguar Baseball team was left uncertain of the future. However, Coach Rashad Smith has stepped up and is “running the show now,” as he puts it. Coach Smith was a junior varsity baseball coach at Flowers for the last four years, so he’s already well acquainted with the program and student-athletes. He’s enjoying his new position as head coach, saying, “installing my program and having the kids buy in is really rewarding.”
The team roster is stacked with many talented players, including seniors Justice Flora, Derek Caldwell-Myers, Donald Spriggs, and Lawrence Williams; junior Raymond Smith, and sophomore Matthew May. As for newcomers, Coach Smith is excited to see freshman Marc Harrison play, “he has a joy and excitement to his game, it’s gonna be really thrilling to see what he can do over the next couple of years within the program.” The team is focused on one goal, with Matthew simply saying, “Undefeated season.”
The Jaguars Baseball team’s packed season begins at home on April 28th against Bowie, followed by another home game against CMIT North on May 1st. The team will then travel to Oxon Hill on May 5th, before returning home on May 8th against Frederick Douglass and on May 12th against Duval. After that, they travel to Eleanor Roosevelt on May 15th and Laurel on May 19th, before their final home game on May 22nd against Northwestern. The season closes with two away games, May 26th at Gwynn Park and May 29th at Wise. Jaguar Sports Media will stream all home games on Justagame Live; more information on the streams will soon be released. If you want a more in-depth look at the team, JSM will highlight them and the Lady Jags Softball team on May 7th.
