Girls Varsity Softball · Softball Preview

The Lady Jags Softball team is happy to be back on the field. Even with COVID-19 protocols and the ongoing pandemic turning this season upside down, positivity is still high on the team. When asked about her planning and preparation for the season, head coach Molly Bender had this to say. “Well, I think it’s been exponentially different with: A. the amount of student-athletes coming out, B. the weather, C. checking in with everybody, the masks, y’know I am very compassionate to all the student-athletes that are having to wear the masks while they’re performing so there have been so many different changes but I love the positive vibes I’m seeing.”

One thing the ladies missed was being able to interact with teammates, Beulah Odiong, a junior, saying, “I missed the team bonding.” The team is still getting used to the current normal, with Erin Barnes, a sophomore, noting, “we are allowed to get but so close to others and it’s harder to have conversations because it seems awkward.”

Team leaders will likely play a part in making the adjustment, with Coach Bender choosing three athletes she feels will take charge. “I have two senior players that I feel will really step up. Nyah Benson is a senior catcher and she can play first base or third base, and she’s looking to play in college next year. Jasmine Vaughn is a senior outfielder. They have played with the program since they were in the ninth grade. Also, Faatimah Brown, who is our pitcher, started almost every game since she’s been a freshman, she’s a junior this year.”

The wait is almost over for the Lady Jaguars Softball team. Their first game will be away at CMIT North on May 28th, then they’ll have their opening home game of the season on May 1st against Fairmont Heights. They’ll travel to Oxon Hill on May 5th, face Laurel at home on May 8th, and then have an away game against Frederick Douglass on May 12th. After that, the team will host for three games straight: against Duval on May 15th, against Parkdale on May 19th, and against Gwynn Park on May 22nd. Finally, the season will close with two away games, one against Eleanor Roosevelt on May 26th and the other against Bowie on May 29th. Jaguar Sports Media will stream all home games on Justagame Live; more information on the streams will soon be released. If you want a more in-depth look at the team, JSM will highlight them and the Jaguars Baseball team on May 7th.
